NEC Virtual PC Center Team Wins Award For Shaping Info Security

Desktop Virtualization Leader Recognized for Strides in Thin Client Computing

Santa Clara, Calif., August 16, 2007 - NEC Corporation of America, a premier provider of IT, network and identity management solutions, today announced that the NEC Virtual PC Center (VPCC) team was honored with the Shaping Info Security 2007 Industry Award.

This prestigious industry award from the Info Security Products Guide, a Silicon Valley communications publication and the world's leading publication on security-related products and technologies, recognizes individuals and teams worldwide that have made the most positive impact on security in today's highly sophisticated and blended attacks environment.

"It's an honor to be recognized for NEC's work in creating a more secure computing environment," stated Yoshikazu Maruyama, senior vice president, IT Platform Business Unit, NEC Corporation. "This award is further validation of the vision begun by our advisor Kazuhiko Kobayashi, who initially saw that NEC could take the complete thin client solution to a higher level of functionality in order to make it a truly viable means of cost-effective, secure computing."

NEC's goal was to make corporate PC data more secure, while improving the way PCs are used in the workspace. By moving the PC off of the desktop and into the data center, an individual's data resides securely in the data center. However, original thin client solutions lacked traditional PC functionality in that multimedia could not be supported. So, there was limited adoption of the solution for personal computer use and the threat to data security remained.

The NEC Virtual PC Center team recognized this barrier to broader adoption of thin client computing and set out to develop a system that would actually out-perform traditional PCs. The NEC Virtual PC Center was introduced to the Asian and European markets in November 2006 and the US market in April 2007 less than two years after NEC began pursuing its vision. Since its introduction, VPCC has gained momentum in enterprise adoption globally including Daiwa Securities Group, Inc., which executed the largest thin client deployment in the Japanese financial industry.

"While there are several awards that recognize outstanding products and technologies, there are few that recognize the teams that conceptualize, develop and bring security products to market," said Rake Narang, editor-in-chief, Info Security Products Guide. "The Shaping Info Security 2007 award is designed specifically to recognize the people focused on making our world more secure. By honoring the NEC VPCC product team for their positive contribution to the industry, we hope to further fuel their continued development and success."
