NEC Advances Virtual PC Center Solution with Broader Multimedia and Operating System Support, Continues To Break Barriers Toward Thin Client Adoption

NEC's New Thin Clients to Run Windows CE and Support Microsoft WMV and Adobe Flash Media; New NEC Virtual PC Servers Provide More Power Per User

Santa Clara, Calif., September 10, 2007 - NEC Corporation of America, a premier provider of IT, network and identity management solutions, today extended its award-winning NEC Virtual PC Center (VPCC) product line to offer broader multimedia and operating system support. The new NEC US110, a Microsoft® Windows® CE-based thin client unit, supports not only high resolution video but also other multimedia formats popular on traditional PCs today, including Microsoft WMV/WMA and Adobe® Flash®. The current generation of NEC thin client device, the US100, now will also support Microsoft WMV/WMA. In addition to enhanced multimedia, the new US110 also includes support for RSA SecureID VPN connectivity. On the server side, NEC introduced the NEC Virtual PC Server Plus with more memory per user, enabling a greater application capacity and performance option for IT managers.

"Recent advances in thin client technology are making thin client computing a more viable and cost-effective solution to data security," said Bob O'Donnell, vice president, IDC. "Part of the challenge to date, however, has been the difficulty in piecing together multiple pieces from multiple vendors into a coherent system. A solutions-based approach can go a long towards easing the transition from traditional PC environments."

NEC's VPCC thin clients, such as the new NEC US110 and the current NEC US100, offer extended multimedia capabilities for common PC applications utilizing multimedia - such as computer-based training, corporate video messaging, voice over IP (VoIP) telephony solutions, and DVD or music playback. Previous thin client devices were only able to support multimedia in a limited number of uncommon video formats at low resolutions - or not at all. Because NEC's thin client devices decode multimedia files on the client-side, the multimedia content can efficiently reach the thin client device through existing network bandwidth, with enough horsepower to play high resolution video at full frame rates.

The additional memory per user on the NEC Virtual PC Server Plus ensures that every corporate image loaded in the Windows virtual machine has the resources necessary for running all PC applications. The additional resources on NEC Virtual PC Server Plus gives IT managers better future-proofing capability. These organizations can now gain all of the benefits of virtualization as they start to replace traditional PCs with NEC's Virtual PC Center system.

"Thin client computing has promised the benefits of increased data security, decreased IT spending, and environmental savings," said Dave Davenport, senior vice president, IT Platform Group of NEC Corporation of America. "NEC is breaking the barriers to adoption by delivering on those promises and developing a complete solution that can truly replace traditional PCs."

NEC US110 and US100 Thin Clients
The US110 and US100 are the first thin client devices to provide rich PC-quality high-speed video and audio processing delivering the next-generation in thin client technology. Improving space efficiency, the palm-sized device can be placed on the desktop or mounted behind the LCD screen. The US100 is a Wyse® Thin OS solution, whereas the US110 runs Windows CE, enabling both to support the high multimedia demands of PC applications. By offering its thin client devices on both operating platforms, NEC gives customers a choice to best fit their needs. Both devices are based on the powerful ServerEngines? NetClient processor, which enables advanced multimedia application delivery.

NEC Virtual PC Server
The NEC Virtual PC Server is an appliance server designed to run virtual PCs on the Windows operating system. Each Virtual PC Server is powered by VMware Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) client sessions and managed through the NEC SigmaSystemCenter? virtual PC management software tools. All NEC VPCC servers are open configurations allowing customers full access to all the features of VMware® VDI and SigmaSystemCenter, as well as the ability to integrate third-party solutions. The NEC Virtual PC Server standard appliances come in 2U rack-mounted servers configured for either 20 or 40 virtual users. The new NEC Virtual PC Server Plus offers higher memory with 22GB RAM in order to deliver 1GB RAM per virtual user; more than double the user's memory as compared to the standard appliances. NEC is also introducing the Virtual PC Server Plus SAN - a SAN enabled configuration server designed to connect with NEC's external SAN storage devices for virtual PC user hard disk space. Both new servers are delivered in 20-user configurations on a 2U rack-mounted server.

NEC Virtual PC Servers, along with the VPCC Management Servers, utilize another important NEC technology - the NEC SigmaSystemCenter management system. SigmaSystemCenter provides a unified and scalable management solution layered on the VMware VDI that simplifies the NEC Virtual PC Server's management and monitoring. NEC's server heritage is evident in its management software technology, which includes built-in integration with the server hardware and virtual operating system platform ensuring high availability. It also includes an easy-to-use interface to manage PC user session creation and monitoring, server utilization profiling, system policies, security, expandability, auditing, account management, deployment functionality, client brokering and more.

"NEC's Virtual PC Center solution leverages virtualized IT infrastructure to deliver rich multimedia content to thin client devices, coupled with superior end-user experience," said Brian Byun, vice president of global partners and solutions at VMware. "We believe Virtual PC Center's enhanced multimedia capabilities and simplified, packaged VDI solution would make it attractive to our joint customers."

Pricing and Availability
The cost between an initial deployment of VPCC versus replacing the PC desktops is comparable, and does not require a larger investment to ensure better data security for the enterprise. However, NEC's VPCC provides added features that cannot be achieved using a desktops PC, including lower service and support costs. As a result, organizations can expect a significant reduction in the total cost of ownership for VPCC, as compared to continuing to use traditional desktops PC, over the life of the systems.

The new US110 retails for $449 as a standalone purchase, but if purchased with NEC Virtual PC Servers, the price is $349. The US110 is expected to ship in Q4 2007. NEC Virtual PC Server Plus retails for $22,900; and the NEC Virtual PC Server Plus, which includes a fibre channel card to connect to NEC's SAN storage, retails for $21,900. Both servers are available now. All NEC VPCC products are sold through selected resellers and direct from NEC Corporation of America. NEC Virtual PC Center Solution
The NEC Virtual PC Center is a complete thin client personal computer solution with full PC functionality and multimedia capability. Designed to secure data by replacing the desktop PC, VPCC offers a full virtual PC environment, combining the US100 or US110 thin client device with NEC Virtual PC Servers and an NEC VPCC Management Server in the data center. The entire VPCC system is called "virtual" because a user can utilize any VPCC workstation to access the company network, and work as if using a traditional PC with its familiar Microsoft® Windows® desktop multimedia environment.
