About SANs
A Storage Area Network (SAN) is a networking topology that interconnects and uses multiple storage devices and servers via a dedicated network. NEC's S-Series of storage products are designed to be deployed easily in any SAN environment, providing hardware and software that compliment and enhance the SAN and give users the option to tailor a SAN infrastructure that meets their business needs.

Because a SAN does not rely on any existing network, improvements in performance, back-up/recovery, availability and storage management are recognized through:

Independent access between each server and storage via a dedicated network
Faster data transfer and backup
Heterogeneous connectivity

Deploying a SAN improves performance, disaster recovery capabilities, on-line recovery, scalability and availability, while reducing management costs. It helps businesses overcome the many challenges they face regarding storage infrastructure, including complexity and manageability, a proliferation of servers, independent storage arrays, and the need for business continuity, back up and high availability.

Non-Disruptive Back-up over SANs
Many business applications today need to be available 24/7/365. A back-up can be a disruptive and time-consuming process making it necessary to halt business applications. Using NEC's storage products with a SAN significantly minimizes or eliminates disruptive back-ups. Using software such as ReplicationSuite (DDR+DSV) and RemoteDataReplication, users can create full volume replications of data and utilize the replicated volumes for back-up while the business application continues to remain available. Improved performance is also achieved since there is no requirement to utilize the LAN.

SAN-enabled High Performance
Since a SAN is a high-speed dedicated network, NEC's S-Series storage products are designed with features and functions that allow full utilization of this bandwidth. The S1500/S2500 offers 4Gbps host/switch interconnects allowing for faster data movement to the SAN from the storage array. Large cache and high speed fibre channel HDD's provide for fast access to data on the SAN.

SAN-based Storage for Mail Servers
Mail servers today are more complex and susceptible to virus infections that can cause data corruption, requiring quick and flawless data restoration when necessary. NEC's S-Series storage products allow for clustering of mail servers for improved management and flexibility. Quick and inexpensive data restoration can be performed using ReplicationSuite (DDR+DSV) software, which tracks only changes to the original data. Users have up to 16 replication points, and can restore to any one point in time.
