NEC ProgrammableFlow Awarded Best of Interop for Infrastructure

New OpenFlow product recognized for significant technology advancement by Interop panel of judges

LAS VEGAS - May 13, 2011 - NEC Corporation of America (NEC) was acknowledged Tuesday by a distinguished panel of judges at Interop for their innovation and technology advancement, as they won Best of Interop in Infrastructure for the new NEC ProgrammableFlow™ PF5240 switch. ProgrammableFlow transforms the way networks are deployed and managed, and the PF5240 switch is the first generally available offering leveraging OpenFlow, an emerging networking technology also showcased at Interop.

Interop Best of Show recognizes technology companies and products that have made significant technological advancements in nine key areas. The winners in each category represent products the judges believe have the most significant technical impact on their segment, and are helping to move business technology forward. The judging panel is composed of award-winning editors and analysts from InformationWeek Analytics. InformationWeek Analytics is recognized as a leader in peer-driven research, providing technology and business professionals with the analysis and perspective they need to run smarter, better IT organizations. UBM TechWeb's Interop is a leading business technology event, held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"NEC invests billions of dollars annually in technology research and development. Our labs have been working on ProgrammableFlow and OpenFlow, in conjunction with Stanford University, since 2008," said Don Clark, director of business development, IT Platform Technologies, NEC. "We are honored to receive this prestigious award for our focus on providing customers a simplified, open, and scalable network with ProgrammableFlow."

"The Best of Interop Awards presents leading edge technologies of the outstanding IT vendors in the industry," said Art Wittmann, Vice President and Director, InformationWeek Analytics. "Each of the category winners represent market innovation and deserve recognition for helping build the energy and growth of today's IT marketplace."

ProgrammableFlow is a powerful, hybrid technology that can integrate into a legacy environment, or fully function with OpenFlow-enabled benefits behind NEC's ProgrammableFlow controller. With 48 ports of gigabit and 4 ports of ten gigabit per second connectivity, the PF5240 provides line rate multi-layer switching, maintaining up to 160,000 network "flows" or units of OpenFlow communication. Flow based networking enables organizations to migrate data traffic dynamically for maintenance and power savings.
