Irving, Texas January 19, 2016 - NEC Corporation of America (NEC), a
leading provider and integrator of advanced IT, communications, managed services and biometric solutions, today announced that its
HYRDRAstor 4.4 storage platform has been selected as a finalist in the data backup hardware category in the 2015 Storage Magazine/
SearchStorage.com Product of the Year Awards.
As has been the case in the 14 previous years, Storage magazine and SearchStorage.com asked technology vendors for data storage systems
products nominations for the Products of the Year awards, which recognize new or upgraded storage products. The six data storage systems
categories included backup and disaster recovery software and services, backup hardware, storage management tools, storage system software,
and the storage hardware categories for all-flash systems and disk/hybrid systems.
What separates the Products of the Year competition from other contests is the specific focus on the previous year. This emphasis levels
the playing field among legacy vendors and startups.
This year's data storage systems finalists were judged by a panel comprised of a cross-section of users, analysts, consultants and Storage
magazine and SearchStorage.com editors. The products were rated according to their innovation, performance, ease of integration, ease of
use, functionality and value.
Products eligible for consideration in the data backup hardware category include tape libraries and drives, backup media, disk backup
targets, virtual tape libraries, deduplication devices and gateway appliances for cloud backup. The data backup hardware category had the
most entries in the last five years, the majority being systems tailored for the enterprise and SMBs. Most of the 12 data backup hardware
category finalists offer full-feature capabilities for both physical and virtual environments, on-premises and the cloud.
At the time of award nomination, NEC's HYDRAstor 4.4 was the latest version of NEC's scale-out grid storage system for backup, archiving
and content repositories that can be configured for up to 4 PB an hour throughput and 100 PB of data in a single system with inline global
deduplication. The system was upgraded with Universal Dedupe Transfer that eliminates the need to transfer deduplicated data blocks from
applications to HYDRAstor to reduce bandwidth use. The latest version of HYDRAstor--Release 5.0--was released in November 2015.
"NEC's HYDRAstor storage solution has consistently raised the bar and delivered innovative enhancements and continues to enhance speed,
efficiency,,and automation for our customers," said Hide Senta, VP of strategic business, NEC Corporation of America. "Since our 4.4
release, we have extended the HYDRAstor solution further through our 5.0 release in November 2015, continuing to meet customer
requirements and maintain a leadership position in performance, efficiency, and investment."
The key feature of the HYDRAstor 4.4 release is the addition of Universal Deduped Transfer, which significantly increases the maximum
performance of HYDRAstor for general applications running on Linux. An additional significant benefit of Universal Deduped Transfer is
that it does not require any application-specific integration, so it can deliver immediate benefits to many applications as soon as it is
deployed via a standard file system interface. With Universal Deduped Transfer, HYDRAstor delivers up to 40 TB/hr per Hybrid Node, and up
to 4 PB/hr (>1 TB/s) per system for general applications, matching the performance previously only available for specific applications.
By comparison, the maximum system performance is about 20x higher than the next closest competitor in the Purpose-Built Backup Appliance
