NEC To Provide Facial Recognition System For New "One ID" Check-In To Boarding Process At Narita Airport
Tokyo, Japan - February 28, 2019 - NEC Corporation today announced it will provide a facial recognition system for the new "One ID" check-in to boarding process introduced by Narita International Airport Corporation (NAA). Going forward, NAA will determine further details for the system and is expected to begin its operation from spring 2020.
This new process will enable passengers at Narita Airport to register facial images during initial procedures, such as check-in, and if the images match within a database of passport photos, they can advance through procedures that include baggage drop-off, passenger security screening entrance and boarding without presenting boarding passes and passports that are conventionally required.
As a result, passengers at Narita Airport are expected to be able to board more smoothly, with fewer repetitive processes and with less time waiting in line.
The new process will utilize NEC's flagship facial recognition artificial intelligence (AI) engine, "NeoFace," featuring the world's most accurate precision (*1) and belonging to NEC's portfolio of advanced biometric authentication technologies, "Bio-IDiom (*2).
This system, the first of its type in Japan, will enhance the accuracy of recognizing individuals for each identification procedure and help enable even more thorough measures for preventing terrorism and other incidents. In addition, as labor shortages become a more serious issue, this new system can enhance the efficiency of operations and reduce the number of personnel at airports by automating identification procedures.
NEC has positioned its safety business as an engine for global growth under its three-year medium-term management plan, the "Mid-term Management Plan 2020," which ends in fiscal 2020. This system accelerates and strengthens the development of solutions and services in support of NEC Safer Cities, and contributes to the creation of safe and secure cities.
